Promise Keepers Video Event Mobilizes Men for Service
“One of the best mini-events ever,”
“Convicting,” “Reinforcing”
Denver, Colo. – Promise Keepers (PK), the international ministry to men, drew fathers, sons, friends and brothers to theaters and churches around the nation on April 12th with a digital video production, and then mobilized men to serve their communities practically. The video included music from the Promise Keepers worship team PK7, and was emceed by Pastor Matt Uldrich of Tucson, Ariz.
Community service projects in 13 communities from coast to coast included building a youth camp, a barn-raising, park clean up, community barbecues and block parties, house painting and building renovation, food drives, blood drives, clothing drives, and more.
What is truth?
Dr. Del Tackett, who leads The Truth Project from Focus on the Family, was featured in the PKAdventure production that helped men apply a Christian worldview in an relativistic age. Barry Whitt, 45, of Ashland, Ohio appreciated the message. “I hear people talk about a thousand different ‘truths.’ Del did a good job explaining what truth is.”
The Small Group
This edition of PKAdventure continued the dramatic and often hilarious antics of men trying to start and sustain a Bible study group (produced by the drama team at Fresno’s Sonrise Church). When things went wrong in the group, things also started to go “right.” Mr. Whitt attended the PKAdventure event in Cleveland with his men’s group. “We laugh because we all put up walls and put on a face in front of other guys at first. Like the guys in the video, we need to say ‘This isn’t enough. I want something deeper.’ We need to be humble, teachable and real.”
One man attending the Houston event was glad the small group drama also tackled marital relations. “I came right home and held an important conversation with my wife that I really didn't feel like dealing with. I opened up, and she was grateful I came (to PKAdventure),” he said.
Jerome Darville watched the PKAdventure small group drama at the Regal Cinemas 18 in Royal Palm Beach, Fla. “I thought I was there living it.”
A school bus full of men came from Springfield to the Dayton, Ohio event.
A Call to Action
Central to the PKAdventure format are diverse and local community service efforts. Actor and mayor of Fresno Alan Autry closed the on-screen feature with a call to action. Mike Lyons, 65, from Brunswick, Ohio, was encouraged. “It was reassuring to see a mayor in California who is a believer,” adding, “I get a real sense of accomplishment. It’s good to work side-by-side with other brothers.” At the other end of the age spectrum, high school students also joined a construction outreach, hauling cement pavers for a Jensen Beach, Fla. charity.
Twenty men traveled from the Cinemark theaters outside Cleveland to help restore the interiors of two churches relocating to historic public buildings. New City Church, a new congregation occupying what used to be West Technical High School, received help installing acoustical tiles. Another church is renovating an old library.
Cleveland’s Dan Buncher installs acoustical tiles for a living. “I thought that I was volunteering to paint some houses today. When I found out that there was a church that wanted acoustic tiles installed in their auditorium, it’s amazing how God’s plans come together.” Pastor Dave Beaver of New City Church was thankful for the help. “It’s a blessing to see brothers come out and lend a hand. This part of the city leads in the number of murders. We want to reach them in a way that they can relate to culturally with the timeless truth of the Gospel.”
In Peoria, some PKAdventure attendees enjoyed demolition work at the Dream Center Peoria facility to make room for the upscale “Hope Store.” Other men painted the free medical clinic at the DCP. Men also donated 20 boxes of books, Bibles and Christian education materials to Love Packages, a resource ministry based in Butler, Ill., and bags of clothing to Teen Challenge’s 10 million pound clothing drive for substance abuse treatment.
Ten men in Frederick, Md. lent a hand for landscaping, spring cleaning and light fix-ups at a local crisis pregnancy center and shelter for homeless women and children.
Wayne Wilson, 49, came to the PKAdventure from Windsor, Ohio with his 11-year old son. “It’s always awesome to meet other brothers, regardless of denomination, race or background. We may do things differently, but we are all serving the Lord.” Members of multiple congregations worked together on projects like building a challenge course at the Camp Jabez for youth outside Dayton, Ohio.
Block parties and community restoration paired up in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., where 80 men at the Waterfront Rescue Mission were fed and treated to a concert. In Myrtle Beach, S.C., Promise Keepers men and local families worked and ate side-by-side in the Turtle Creek neighborhood. PKAdventure volunteers also helped prepare the site of this summer’s Andrew Palau Beachfest. In southeast Albuquerque, 100 PK volunteers helped firefighters with a community cleanup. Some 200 residents took part as well, and the city hauled away 130,000 pounds of trash!
The PKAdventure event in Ortonville, Minn. was postponed due to a record-breaking storm across mid-Minnesota that dropped more than a foot of wet, heavy snow. The community service project, a spring cleaning for the city’s parks and golf courses, will have to wait.
