In ‘On the Edge with Ken Harrison,’ Steve Farrar Shares How His Personal Experience with Depression Lead Him to Become a Champion of Men’s Ministry

January 21, 2021By PK ManagerNews

COLORADO SPRINGS — Ken Harrison, CEO of WaterStone and volunteer chairman of Promise Keepers, is joined by Steve Farrar on the latest episode of “On the Edge with Ken Harrison.” Together they discuss the downheartedness of depression, experiencing God’s loving discipline, and how to build spiritual muscle.

The podcast, available in both audio and video form, can be found on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube. Podcast listeners can also receive a challenging weekly devotional that will inspire them to put their faith into action.

Steve Farrar, known for his candor, his humor, and his commitment, is a fierce advocate for his mission to equip men to be the spiritual leaders of their homes and churches. He earned his doctorate from Dallas Theological Seminary and he has pastored several churches. In 1990 he founded Men’s Leadership Ministries and has been speaking to men around the world ever since.
Farrar has spoken at hundreds of men’s conferences and events, and has authored 20 books for men, including the bestseller, Point Man. For twenty years he has taught a weekly Men’s Bible study in Dallas that is attended by several hundred men and it is continually updated on-line.
Additionally, Farrar serves on Promise Keepers’ Pastoral Advisory Board.

Highlights of Farrar’s interview in the podcast include:

We can find comfort knowing that God will never abandon us in our darkest valleys.

“God puts us in the wilderness where we can’t see any way out and even if everybody’s wilderness looks different, we can all reflect on this feeling. Maybe you’ve lost your reputation, your marriage, or your money, and you feel that you’re stuck with no way to recover. But, Psalm 23:4 tells us, ‘Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.’ As Martyn Lloyd-Jones recalled, every valley and every wilderness has a beginning, middle, and an end. You may not be able to see it at the time, but God is not going to leave you in that position forever.”

“It is important to pray for a teachable heart in these moments because we don’t want to miss what God is trying to teach us in these valleys. When I was experiencing my depression, I would pray to God, ‘Lord, don’t let me miss what you are teaching me. I don’t want to flunk this class. I don’t want to have to go back to summer school three years later. I want to learn, Lord. Would you show me what you have for me?’”

God’s discipline upon us yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness.

“If you are listening to this podcast and you know you are in the toughest place you’ve ever been, know that the Lord is with you, even if it’s because of your own sin. Our Lord is sovereign and he is shaping you. He will discipline you, as we know from Hebrews 12 – ‘If you’ve never been disciplined by the Lord you’re not a child of God.’ Every son that he loves is disciplined and although being disciplined is not fun, it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness.”

God uses our setbacks to build spiritual muscle and it is our responsibility to take this newfound wisdom to aid others on similar journeys.

“God uses our setbacks to build spiritual muscle. Sometimes we get fatigued and worn down and we don’t know if we can make it. I remember during my depression I wouldn’t ask God to help me get through the day – I would ask him to help me make it to lunch. I would seek him and his guidance to get through the next hours without falling apart. I had never been like this in my life before, but it was exactly what I needed. God put me in his gymnasium and he was working me out.”

“It is important to note I didn’t talk about my experience with depression for a while because I was embarrassed that I went through it… I recommend that for anyone struggling with depression that we love them, disciple them, and help them figure out their gifts. We need to let them know how God made them and encourage them to get on their way.”

Promise Keepers Virtual Marriage Summit Returns Favorite Speakers Gary Rosberg, Crawford Loritts, Samuel Rodriguez, Dan Seaborn and Brad Stine to the Promise Keepers Stage

January 21, 2021By PK ManagerNews

The completely free 2-hour online Marriage Summit on Jan. 23 brings together the most trusted voices with emerging authorities to empower men to build strong marriages in stressful times.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. — Promise Keepers (PK) was the greatest men’s movement in modern times. In the 1990’s, seven million men stood up to be faithful to Christ. As Dr. Jack Hayford said at one stadium event, “We’ve come to stand together, hearing the call of God from the eternal Word and scriptures that there would be a man who would stand in the gap.” Those men kneeled, shoulder to shoulder, across racial and denominational barriers, praying to God in confession and brokenness, and crying out to Him for forgiveness and victory. Then they stood up, determined to be men of integrity in their marriages, their families, their churches, and their communities.

During that era, men learned the secrets of leading a thriving, God-honoring home from a host of powerful communicators — secrets that were diametrically opposed to the political correctness of the culture.

In a pandemic-shaped world of 2021, men need these secrets more than ever. Not every marriage is in distress, but every marriage could be better, and it’s the responsibility of men to be the thermostat and not the thermometer.

To empower men to build strong marriages in stressful times, Promise Keepers is launching two timely initiatives in January and February that bring back marriage experts Gary Rosberg, Crawford Loritts, Samuel Rodriguez, Brad Stine, and Dan Seaborn to impact a whole new generation of men.

Initiative 1: Promise Keepers’ First Online Marriage Summit for Men

The PK Marriage Summit, a completely free and fast-paced 2-hour experience, is designed to benefit all men, whether they are married, engaged, single, or divorced. Men can participate in

the Marriage Summit in groups at church, home, base, or dorm or as individuals online on Jan. 23.

Speakers drawn from PK alumni include:

● Dr. Gary Rosberg, co-founder of the international ministry, “America’s Family Coaches,” and bestselling author with wife Barb of multiple books and videos on marriage and family with nearly one million in print.

● Crawford Loritts, pastor of Fellowship Bible Church, board member for CRU, Family Life, and Chick-fil-A Inc, and author of Your Marriage Today…And Tomorrow

● Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC), author of From Survive to Thrive and Promise Keepers board member

● Dan Seaborn, founder of Winning At Home, Inc. and leader for the Marriage & Family Division of the American Association of Christian Counselors. His goal is to provide practical, biblical insight into marriage and family issues.

● Brad Stine, known as the man that revolutionized and launched the new era of Christian comedy in America. Brad’s comedy allows him to be a missionary to America, bringing the gospel in unique ways to influence the cultural narrative.

Joining the alumni for the marriage summit will be:

● Dr. Gary Chapman, counselor and author of The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts, which has been a New York Times bestseller for 10 years running.

● John Bevere, co-founder of Messenger International and bestselling author. Over 40 million copies of his resources have been given away worldwide.

● Jimmy Evans, founder and CEO of MarriageToday, a ministry and nationally syndicated television program devoted to helping couples thrive in strong and fulfilling marriages and families.

● Victor Marx, sexual assault survivor and high-risk humanitarian with successful missions to Iraq, Syria, North Africa and Southeast Asia helping orphans and widows

● Tim Ross, pastor of Embassy City Church and author of Upset the World, which shows how kindness and friendliness can break down barriers and build relationships.

● Jonathan Evans, serves with his father, Dr. Tony Evans, both in the local church and the national ministry. He is the chaplain of the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks.

● Sen. James Lankford, United States Senator serving Oklahoma, chairman of Regulatory Affairs and Federal Management Subcommittee, and Promise Keepers board member.

● Ken Harrison, chairman of Promise Keepers, host of the “On the Edge” podcast and author of Rise of the Servant Kings: What the Bible Says About Being a Man

Themes include:

● How to reconnect with your partner

● How to resolve conflict

● Positive communication

● Sex and romance

● Emotional intimacy

● The power of praying for your marriage and spouse

● Sexual integrity

Promise Keepers’ Chairman Ken Harrison said,

“Christian men today are yearning to be, as my friend Mark Batterson says, famous in their own homes. As men, we were made to lead — and to serve. When a man steps into God’s high calling, he keeps his promises and those around him get cared for and nurtured. Real men never do anything for our own gain, but we will swim in shark-infested waters for those who are counting on us.”

“The PK Virtual Marriage Summit will inform and inspire men as never before to cherish their wives and families, to be unshakeable in their commitment to making the world around them a better place, and to keep their promises no matter what.”

Initiative 2: The Promise Keepers’ Marriage Challenge

The Virtual Men’s Marriage Summit kicks off a 3-week challenge that will place you side by side virtually with other men as you build up your marriages in a concrete way. Any man, anywhere, at any time, can join the challenge through the Promise Keepers app.

Promise Keepers Announces First-Ever Men’s Marriage Summit

January 6, 2021By PK ManagerNews, Promise Keepers Event

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. — A recent headline in The Wall Street Journal shone a spotlight on the extreme pressures at work on marriages in the age of COVID-19: “Coronavirus stress has produced a pressure cooker inside homes, hurting even strong partnerships and, experts say, likely breaking others.”

The fourth promise of a Promise Keeper is a commitment to build strong marriages and families through love, protection, and biblical values. Building a strong marriage that will not just survive but thrive during the age of COVID-19 is far from easy, but it is possible. Profound stresses, deep strains, and even fractures can be healed. Relationships can be stronger in the broken places.

Men are the key to forging strong marriages in stressful times. As men take up their biblical responsibilities, lay down their lives for their wives and children, and lead like Jesus, relationships deepen, and pressure pushes couples closer together instead of farther apart.

To empower men to build strong marriages in stressful times, Promise Keepers is launching two timely initiatives in January and February.

Ken Harrison and Pastor Tim Ross explained the significance of Promise Keepers’ Men’s Marriage Summit.

“Our culture bombards us with a vision of masculinity which is passive, soft, silent, and impotent. The result: men today don’t have a clear model of what it means to be better husbands, fathers, friends and men.

“What our world needs, what our wives deserve, and what our Savior demands–are men who are servant kings.

“Men who as kings are proactive, courageous, generous and humble. Men who embrace their identity as leaders with authority and conviction.

“Men who as servants put their wives and children ahead of themselves, who nurture them and make sure everything they do is in their best interests, and who are ready to lay down their lives for them if necessary.

“The Marriage Summit will not only provide insight into becoming a better husband and building a better marriage, it will also provide opportunities for men to take what they’ve learned and put it into action with other motivated men.” – Ken Harrison

“Promise Keepers continues to provide world-class content for men to grow in their relationships with God. This year our emphasis on marriage will give men practical ways to strengthen relationships with their wives and children to establish a blessing in their families for generations to come!” – Pastor Tim Ross

Initiative 2: The Promise Keepers’ Marriage Challenge
